Lithium-ion batteries generate power through a chemical reaction. As the chemicals degrade, gas builds up, which punctures the internal membrane.
This can also occur through damage or defect.
Batteries can swell and begin to push the screen and/or back panel out of the housing/frame. If you notice that part of your device is separating, and this coincides with a significant decline in battery life, then your battery might be swelling.
Lithium batteries are hazardous. If you suspect that your battery is swelling, get it removed or replaced.

Customers often ask how long it takes after getting their device wet until it stops working.

Our customer bought this in within minutes of it happening.
Upon inspection, there wasn't much liquid inside.
Yet you can see in the photo how quickly corrosion sets in when there's voltage running through the device.
Here's what to do if your device comes in contact with liquid: > Turn it off - disconnect the battery if you can > Do not plug it in to charge - it'll be wet inside for at least another 48 hours > Take it to a repair centre so that it can be stripped and cleaned, before testing, diagnostics and further repair or data recovery > If repaired, back up your data, as it may develop faults in the future > Rice is great for eating, not so great at fixing electronics

Why does my iPhone always start playing up or die just after the manufacturer warranty expires?
The logic board; which holds hundreds of small, delicate component; is screwed into the housing. When the housing flexes, so does the board, which often causes these components to disconnect, and creates a short on the board.
