The growth of microprocessors is exponential, as demonstrated by Moore's Law

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

This is a prediction made by American engineer Gordon Moore in 1965 that the number of transistors per silicon chip will double every year.

Moore's Law implies that computers become smaller, faster, and cheaper with time, as transistors on integrated circuits become more efficient.

Whilst experts have speculated on an end date; where it becomes physically impossible to create faster chips at this rate, new innovations have meant that it's still going strong nearly 60 years on!

As we push silicone to it's limit, companies like Intel and AMD are working with graphene to create quantum computing, which will spark yet more rapid growth. Allegedly, Once we make this jump, we could see a staggering 1000x increase in performance.

Buy a refurbished iPhone for Christmas

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

It's that time of year where every one is scurrying around the shops amongst polite and orderly chaos; fighting over Turkeys, buying last minute gifts for their extended family, and spending liberally (or excessively) on things they don't need or want any other time of year; because it's Christmas.

So whilst you're at it, here's 4 reasons to buy a refurbished phone or tablet this holiday season.

> It's significantly cheaper than buying new. Every penny counts between now and January pay day 💰

> Older devices are better value than the newest devices. If it was the cutting edge must-have gadget of 2019, it will probably do fine for checking emails, watching TikToks and taking the occasional selfie in 2021 💁‍♀️

> Recycling and reusing devices is better for the environment. You can feel real good about doing your bit for the planet 🌍

> You get to support a small, local business (like us) - which is always a win 👍

"How long will you need my phone for?"

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

By far, the most common question asked by our customers. Way more so that "How much will it cost?". Whilst some people seem happy to leave their phones with us indefinitely, many of our customers seem to develop intense feelings of anxiety and hopelessness at the thought of being without their phone for 45 minutes.

This is understandable. We use our phones for everything. Therefore, every one asks if they can jump the repair queue because they need their phone for work or school, or they have a family member in the hospital. What they don't know is that the three customers before them also said the same thing. Every one needs their phone all the time.

Increasingly common is the amount of people that need their phones to measure their blood sugar values with their phones by scanning a device implanted in their arm. Tesla drivers need their phones to unlock their cars, and good luck using public transport without an app. A lot of people don't carry a wallet, so cannot pay for anything without their phone. Then there's the small matter of not being able to travel (or do anything normal really) without your vaccine passport. And god forbid we should have to sit in a waiting room without scrolling.

This is where having a spare phone or separate work/personal phone really pays off. A tablet or laptop can be just as useful or better for most things. Having your partner or colleagues phone set up with any key notes and apps can be a life saver if you lose or break your phone.

Our question for you to ponder today is, are you overly reliant on one device? How could you mitigate the problems that would arise if you lost your phone?

Apple's Best Sellers

Data transfer and setup on an iPhone 11 for a customer trading in his trusty iPhone 6.

Released in 2014, the iPhone 6/6 Plus is the best-selling smartphone of all time. 222 million units have been sold.

The iPhone 11 trails way behind in 2nd, with 102 million units sold since it's introduction in 2019.

This year Apple surpassed 1 billion active iPhones, and about 1.65 billion active devices - partially thanks to Talkback Comms!🙌

Fun fact for perspective: 1 billion seconds is 32 years.

An absolutely staggering achievement for 1 Company to impact lives at such scale and magnitude.

Pretty big achievement by Apple too.

Flood Illuminator; Face ID Repair

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

In the morning, you may go around your house, switching everything on in order. Your phone does this when it is trying to boot. If there's an issue, it will keep looping and restarting, because it cannot identify or switch on a component, gets confused, and starts over.

In this case, a very confused iPhone 11 wouldn't boot due to some corrosion on the flood illuminator - a component used in the True Depth camera system. It takes just a very tiny amount of moisture to leave corrosion on a component.

Replacing this component would have resulted in the permanent loss of Face ID. So instead, we remove it, clean the corrosion and re-solder it back on.

The phone is no longer confused. Normal artificial life is resumed.
