Monday Morning Tech Tip: Adaptive Charging

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

Preserve your phones long-term battery health by enabling this feature.

With Adaptive Charging enabled, your phone will charge rapidly until it reaches 80%. It will then slow down - charging at a rate of 0.5-1W, or even pause charging temporarily. The phone will time it so that the battery reaches 100% charge just before you wake up.

It works based on your sleep schedule - detecting when you plug in at night, and the time your morning alarm is set. With this information, it can calculate when and how quickly to charge the battery.

This may prolong your battery's life-span because constant fast-charging causes the battery temperature to increase, which will cause it to degrade more over time.

On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimised Battery Charging.

On Google Pixel and OnePlus, go to Settings > Battery > Adaptive Battery.

Other manufacturers like Samsung use Adaptive Fast Charging, which will slow the rate of charging by reducing power output as it gets closer to 100%. It doesn't sync with your sleep schedule though.

You will need to use a genuine charger for Adaptive & Fast Charging functions. For best performance, safety and reliability, you really should use the charging equipment that was designed and engineered for your device.

Get your battery replaced in less than an hour, or pick up a genuine charger

Here's what Apple announced at their March event this year

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

Green iPhone 13's (pictured)
Very nice. But if i'd just bought an iPhone 13, I'd be disappointed that this colour wasn't available since its initial release in September.

iPhone SE 5G
The third generation SE (Special Edition) iPhone. An upgraded version of the SE 2020 - which was an upgraded version of the iPhone 8. The main difference here, is the implementation of 5G connectivity, and the faster A15 processor, which the iPhone 13 series uses.

iPad Air 5
Again, the Air now has 5G, and like the iPad Pro, now has the faster M1 processor. Then, it's usual improvements across the board with camera, display and USB speed.

M1 Ultra Chip
Okay this is actually pretty cool. This is essentially two M1 Max chips connected to form one super powerful chip. 128GB unified memory (essentially combined RAM from the CPU & GPU). A 20 core CPU, and 64GB GPU. A 32 core neural engine capable of 22 trillion operations per second. All of this delivered with just 60 watts of power consumption, making it extremely energy efficient. Initial benchmark tests are very impressive.

Mac Studio
A high power, compact desktop computer. The highest spec Mac Studio with M1 Ultra 8TB SSD will cost $8000.

Mac Display
A 27" 5K studio display. 218 pixels per inch. Six-speaker sound system. Looks pretty tidy.

You can see the products in a slightly cheesy 11 minute summary of the event here.

A Tragic Tale

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

Take a look at this awfully sad phone. Once a king, now a mere peasant. Fallen from grace, never again will it rise to such prestige, or be held with any admiration.

This is what happens when you insert a SIM card without the SIM tray.

The card was jammed inside the SIM reader. We opened the device and carefully extracted the SIM card. Upon inspection, it was clear that the SIM reader was damaged.

It looks like it would be difficult to replace. The reader is soldered on to a dual-layer board, which would have to be split to access. But needs must.

Now there's a bigger problem. Unfortunately there are no replacement SIM readers available for this model - even in China. SIM reader replacements are not a common repair, and this is not a common device. In these cases, it's unlikely that anyone will manufacture the spare component that we need.

That's a £950.00 phone, less than 3 months old, that our customer has to discard and replace. Moment of silence please.

This is a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. Perhaps the most stylish phone we've ever seen. It's certainly not the most powerful device on the market. The seamless, folding design brings with it some limitations, which result in reduced battery life and camera quality - when compared to other premium models.

Still, very impressive engineering. Cutting-edge innovation and design. Alas, defeated by a SIM card.

What is a GPU?

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

It's a graphics processing unit. It's responsible for the image on your computer.

If you require assistance with your PC or laptop, then check out our computer services.

If you want to learn something, keep reading...

The GPU is a specialised processor that renders graphical data. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) works in conjunction with software, and sends graphics information to the GPU. The GPU takes this data, and decides how to utilise the pixels on the display to create an image. It does this by performing billions or even trillions of complex mathematical and geometric calculations per second.

Many devices including smartphones have a GPU chip or an integrated system on chip (SoC), which contains the CPU, GPU, and other electrical components.

Most computers and larger devices have a graphics card - as pictured. This is an expansion card, which generates graphics to display on an output device, i.e. a monitor. The GPU sits in the middle of the card, and does the same job as described above. Notice the big fans on the card. The GPU gets extremely hot, and so it needs to be cooled by fans, thermal paste and a heat sink to avoid degradation.

Video games and other animated programs require large amounts of power, as each frame has to be calculated and drawn individually - typically at a rate of 60 frames per second.

The power of a GPU and it's functions are not just limited to gaming. Computers that are used for engineering with CAD (computer-aided design) require a powerful graphics setup to create 2D and 3D models and designs. CAD is used in architecture, manufacturing, product design, and many other industries. GPU's are also used for mining cryptocurrency, because they are more efficient at solving repetitive math problems than CPUs.

You may be aware of current shortages and subsequent high prices of computer parts - especially GPUs which are already very difficult to make. Increased popularity and use of cryptocurrencies, plus more people working from home has caused an increase in demand for GPUs. Supply chain issues have made it more difficult to produce and distribute the hardware, (thanks COVID). The main manufacturers of GPUs and graphics cards are AMD, Intel and Nvidia. These companies are working hard on new technologies and solutions to satisfy the increasingly high demand for better products. Hopefully, people will actually be able to buy graphics cards later this year, without having to re-mortgage or sell their children on the black market.

As always, we hope you learned something. Have a great day.

What does it take?

by George Lovell | | 0 comments

> Precision. We are using specific temperatures and miniscule tools, in tight, highly concentrated areas.

> Patience. Completing a process can take hours, and it may not even fix the problem. This is very frustrating. At this point it's important to relax, reset and re-assess.

> Care & attention. These are expensive devices, containing valuable data such as photos. At any given moment, we could be less than a millimetre from failure.

> Constant learning. Until mastered, there's always something to learn, practice or improve upon. And reaching mastery is like reaching the horizon.
